Manchester City chose to withdraw from the race to sign Alexis Sanchez this week after balking at the spiralling cost of the deal but that blow must have been softened in the knowledge that they still have Sergio Aguero to fall back on.
As options go, it isn’t a bad one, is it? Pep Guardiola was hoping for a reaction, not just to City’s first domestic defeat of the season at Anfield last Sunday, but from Aguero, too, in response to the realisation that the responsibility of leading the line will continue to rest heavily on his shoulders. The City manager got both.
